The controversial, long-awaited arterial bypass is finally due to open.

A Queenstown council spokesman’s confirmed the road, which links Frankton Rd to Gorge Rd via Melbourne and Henry Sts, will open on January 30.

The route has prompted a backlash among some locals because of cost increases and delays.

Its completion in three weeks’ time will allow construction crews to move on to a stormwater upgrade on Stanley/lower Ballarat Sts from February 10.

This is expected to cause a one-week closure of that intersection from February 17, requiring traffic to use the new bypass route instead.

More progress will also be seen next week on the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi Queenstown Package as crews carry out extensive tree removal.

On Wednesday, about 40 trees and shrubs surrounding the Frankton Bus Hub will be removed between 2am and 6am to make room for an extension and upgrade of the hub.

NZTA says it’s working with local groups to eco-source seeds to replant the areas where they’re removing trees, including near Frankton Golf Centre.

The golf centre’s entrance and driveway will be set in its final location early this year, and its new parking area made operational.

NZTA also expects to complete preparation work around the BP roundabout this year, so changes to the busy intersection can begin in 2026.

That work includes continuing to move and upgrade utilities providing water, power and fibre to more than half of Queenstown.

There are three more pipes to install, including a stormwater pipe behind the bus hub, one through the bus hub and SH6 and an upgraded and bigger wastewater pipe to connect the existing pipes to.
