Sexual assault claim 'unfounded'

Queenstown police say an allegation of a sexual assault in Fernhill earlier this month was ''unfounded''.

A police media spokesperson said in a release late yesterday afternoon following a thorough investigation,  police were no longer investigating the alleged incident.

''Police have determined that the allegation was unfounded

''As such, no further steps are required from a police perspective.

''Police would like to thank members of the public for the information they provided in relation to the report.''

An appeal for witnesses to the alleged attack was made on August 13 after the victim was apparently followed to her Fernhill home by an unknown male.

The police said it was likely the man entered the house through the unsecured front door before entering the woman's bedroom where he was said to have sexually violated her.

At the time they said the attacker was ''scared off'' from the woman's house after her cellphone rang repeatedly.

The woman underwent a medical examination and did not suffer any injuries.
