Victim sought after unprovoked assault by one of 3 exiting bar

Police are seeking the victim of an unprovoked assault in central Queenstown on May 25.

The assault occurred about 2.40am at a taxi rank near Searle Lane and Camp St, a media statement said.

The victim was looking at his phone while walking towards the Cookie Time store when he was punched by one of three men who had left a bar in Searle Lane.

After the incident, a member of the public briefly spoke to the victim and handed him his beanie, which had fallen off during the assault.

Detective Lisa Watt said police learned about the incident while investigating an assault that had occurred in a Searle Lane bar a short time earlier.

The alleged offender in the first incident had been arrested, but police wanted to speak to the victim of the later assault, the passer-by and any other witnesses.

The victim was described as having a black beard and wearing a black puffer jacket, blue jeans, white shoes and a black beanie.

Police wanted to understand what happened and hold the person responsible to account, Det Watt said.
