Summer rugby’s back on Queenstown’s calendar with confirmation the southern-based Highlanders will play a Super Rugby Pacific pre-season game against Moana Pasifika on February 6, Waitangi Day.

Brought to the resort again by realtor Bayleys Queenstown, it follows a pre-season game early last year between the same sides — also at the Events Centre — which drew about 5000 spectators despite chilly conditions.

Kick-off’s at 2.30pm on the Friday public holiday.

Local Bayleys CEO Stacy Coburn comments: "We are excited to continue our brand alignment and long association with the Highlanders and continue to bring games to our region — and connect the local supporters, families, our wider region and more so the young fans who don’t often get an opportunity to see them up close."

Highlanders marketing manager Amanda Gould adds: "Queenstown is the perfect setting for a summer pre-season rugby game.

"It’s always a vibrant match-day experience, and we invite our local fans and supporters from around the region to come and enjoy all that Queenstown and Central Otago have to offer and make it a long weekend to remember."

Gates open an hour before the game with entertainment, food trucks and family-friendly activities available before the opening whistle sounds.
