Waimate police are investigating the killing of a calf which was found dead on Sunday after being shot and then apparently hit by a vehicle.

Southern Canterbury A&P Association president Dan Studholme  had been looking after the calf.

On Sunday he received a phone call from a forestry worker who had come across the dead animal on the side of a road.

Mr Studholme said the calf had been shot at least five times with a 22 magnum rifle near Waimate.

He said on social media none of those shots would have been lethal and he added the animal was shot twice from behind.

``Once through the stomach, twice at the top of the jaw bone. It was also likely rammed with a vehicle as it had a completely smashed femur.''

Sergeant Kevin Reynolds, of Waimate, said police needed the public to come forward with any information they had which could help police discover who was responsible for the death.

I hate to state the obvious, but is it not possibly more reasonable to assume that it may have been hit by a car, it was found on the roadside so could easily have been on the road, and the occupants had attempted to put it down as it tried to limp away hence two shots in the rear and then two (attempted coup de gras) in the head to finish it off?

Just my country brainthinkin's, but seems pretty solid.
