Cordon in Glenavy after reports shots fired


A police cordon remains in place around a rest area at the South Canterbury town of Glenavy, north of Oamaru, this morning after reports shots were fired last night.

Sergeant Blair Wilkinson, of Oamaru, told the Otago Daily Times police from Oamaru and Waimate converged on the scene on the northern side of the Waitaki River bridge about 10pm, after a report several gunshots were heard.

There was also an unconfirmed report a person had been heard screaming for help.

He said the the incident was being investigated by the Timaru CIB.

Two armed police were guarding the scene about 9.40am, while at least two other officers carried out a scene examination.

A small area directly opposite the rest area was also cordoned off.

Inquiries are continuing and no suspects were being sought at this stage.
