A foundation for identity and belonging
When a young man joins TBHS, he steps into a community built on deep history and a powerful sense of unity. He becomes a vital member of our school whanau, connecting his journey to the long, proud roll of honour stretching back over 145 years. Here, students don't just learn; they grow together and begin their significant journey towards maturity alongside their classmates.
A broad curriculum
Our mission is defined by our powerful guiding principle: Ma te Matauranga te Mana — Knowledge is Power.
We are committed to unlocking the full potential of every student by offering a curriculum that provides choice and challenge:
● Academic Excellence: Rigorous senior programmes designed for those targeting university and tertiary study.
● Real-World Skills: Practical, applied courses that introduce pathways into vital fields like trades, agriculture, and high-tech industries.
We actively encourage students to follow their innate abilities and passions, ensuring they are well-prepared to be positive, skilled citizens who contribute meaningfully to society.
Students have access to a wide range of subjects, from senior programmes designed for those targeting university and tertiary study, to practical, applied courses that introduce pathways into vital fields like trades.
Prioritising wellbeing

First and foremost, we know that building strong teacher/student relationships is the most important thing a school can do to produce successful, happy young men. This commitment to pastoral care is the collective responsibility of everyone involved — our dedicated staff, parents and the students themselves. Boys need structure and they need reliable adults in their lives. A pivotal experience for building camaraderie is the year nine camp at John Scott Lodge at Lake Tekapo, a time for cementing lifelong friendships and a strong sense of brotherhood.
Developing the whole person
Education extends far beyond the four walls of the classroom. Extra-curricular engagement in culture and sport is seen as vital to a young man's physical, emotional, and intellectual maturity. These activities are essential workshops for teaching:
● Perseverance and commitment.
● Teamwork and collaboration.
● The value of friendship.
We provide a wealth of options, with the simple goal of ensuring the boys have fun and thrive.
Thomas House: A home away from home
The Thomas House boarding facility offers an active, family-oriented residence. Here, boys quickly form strong, supportive bonds. We offer 24-hour active care and a modern, inclusive pastoral system, all supported by comfortable, contemporary facilities, dedicated to fostering learning and character growth.
Ultimately, Timaru Boys’ High School is a respected institution of learning, but it is also a safe, supportive place where young men are encouraged to take calculated risks, build resilience, and emerge as future leaders. We enthusiastically embrace the demanding yet critical mission of growing good men.
