The illegal dumping of green waste and old kitchen cabinetry in Omarama has been labelled "inappropriate" and "disappointing" by the Waitaki District Council.

Last month, a large pile of green waste and cabinets and drawers from a kitchen refurbishment was dumped at the Omarama Stream Reserve. It was reported about two weeks ago, recreation manager Erik van der Spek said.

The council had been going through the rubbish in an attempt to identify the dumper.

"We think we may have found some evidence, but we’ve just got to work through the process now," Mr van der Spek said.

"In the meantime, we’ve obviously got to pick it up and tidy up the reserve."

Illegal dumping in the Waitaki district occurred on a "sporadic" basis, but "this was certainly a much larger-scale deposit" than usual, he said.

"It’s unfortunate and inappropriate behaviour that affects all the other residents, as far as their use of the reserve, and, obviously, all the other people end up having to pay for this person’s actions.

"It’s certainly not what we expect people to do in a community environment. It’s very disappointing."

Mr van der Spek encouraged anyone with information on this incident, or any others, to contact the Waitaki District Council on (03) 433-0300.

The council could issue infringement fees, charge for costs of investigation and clean-up, and take offenders to court where they could be prosecuted and fined.
