Icy conditions yesterday are believed to have led to several vehicles colliding near Lake Tekapo, leaving seven people injured.
Hato Hone St John was notified of a motor vehicle incident on Tekapo-Twizel Rd, Tekapo, at 10.12am.
"We responded with one first response unit and two ambulances," a St John spokesperson said.
"We assessed and treated seven patients at the scene. One was in a moderate condition and six were in a minor condition. No transport to hospital was required."
A police statement said five vehicles were involved and inquiries into the circumstances of the crash were ongoing.
State Highway 8 was closed between Lake Pukaki and Tekapo until about 1pm.
The MetService recorded a temperature of about -7°C at the time of the incident, with sub-zero temperatures in the area until 3pm.
"Conditions in the Mackenzie Basin this week have made driving conditions challenging, including ongoing fog and black ice," a NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi statement said.
"This led NZTA to put in place temporary speed limits in some high-risk places on SH8 earlier in the week."
