The Temuka pair of Sam Morton and Dave Wood have been crowned the winners of the Suzuki West End pairs at the weekend.

The competition was played over two days at the West End Bowling Club, with teams playing on Saturday to qualify for the top division on Sunday.

After three rounds on Sunday, two teams remained unbeaten.

South Canterbury’s most consistent bowler, Trevor Cloughley from Kia Toa, and the ever reliable Dave Carey, from Temuka, along with Morton and Wood.

Cloughley and Carey have had an amazing run playing pairs together in the past winning the Red O’Neill trophy two years ago.

After a year off Carey has come back refreshed and looks to be a danger on the green once again.

In their last game Cloughley and Carey played against the developing bowler Brodie Devine from Waimate and club president Dave McNeill.

After five ends the score was in favour of Cloughley leading five to four but in the second half of game they showed their dominance, going on to win.

The other game was another cliffhanger with Morton and Wood playing Kia Toa’s Lockie Barnes and up-and-coming bowler Aaron Taylor.

Playing the last end, Barnes was holding on to win with one bowl to go but Morton, who was five down on the head, elected to run the kitty in the ditch to win the game.

He played it to perfection and it was enough for them to win the tournament, it was one of the best shots you will see played by the big fellow.
