Staging a play that’s set in a church basement in a church hall, is bringing a touch of realism to a unique Timaru fundraiser.

The Charitable Sisterhood of the Second Trinity Victory Church follows the humorous and heartfelt interactions between four women as they sort through donations for a local relief effort during a storm that has flooded the roads.

The production, which opens tonight, is being held at St Mary’s Hall on Church St and is also serving as a fundraiser to help with repairs of the venue.

The hall is used by more than 200 people each week for a wide range of community activities and is now in urgent need of essential repairs to address water ingress into the walls and to seal the exterior structure, ensuring it is protected from the elements.

In a statement, St Mary’s Anglican Church parish administrator Sharleyne Diamond said with the building approaching 100 years old, it was not surprising that some repairs were now necessary.

"These works will help preserve the hall for the future, so that it can continue to support the many community groups and individuals who rely on it today."

Directed by Alice Sollis, the play aims to remind audiences that even in the most ordinary places, extraordinary stories and connections can be found.

Head of props Michele Stanton, said many of the on-stage items for the production were already on site in the hall’s storage room.

"The beauty of a church hall is that people tend to donate things year-round not just for major events like the one in the play, so I didn’t have to search far to set the stage."

The play will run until October 11. Tickets can be purchased from the iTICKET website or the Timaru Information Centre for $25. Some door sales will be available. — Allied Media
