An out of this world visitor is set to land in Timaru next week.

Distinguished American astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria will be passing through Timaru on Monday and stopping in at the Timaru District Council Chambers to provide a presentation about his extensive career.

An Astronaut Hall of Fame member, he has more than 40-years of aviation and space experience with the US Navy and NASA and is currently the chief astronaut for Axiom Space.

He commanded the crew of Axiom Mission 1, the first private mission to the International Space Station in human history, and subsequently served as commander of Axiom Mission 3.

A six-time astronaut, he holds NASA records for the most extravehicular activities (EVA) or ‘space walks’ (10) and cumulative EVA time (67 hours, 40 minutes).

The visit has been organised by the South Canterbury Museum along with the US Embassy after the success of the Mars Rover replica visit last year to Timaru.

The presentation will begin at 5.15pm and is free entry. — Allied Media
