South Canterbury’s young guns Alphy Trevathan and Kieran Aker were all class in cleaning up the premier pairs one-day tournament played on the Geraldine green on Saturday.

From a strong field of players that played in the event it was disappointing not to see more teams from town clubs. A field of 16 teams played four games of 14 ends and after three games there were three teams with three wins.

Adrian Robins from West End, playing with Kia Toa’s Trev Cloughley, had three wins and played a strong composite team of Temuka’s Sam Morton and Kia Toa’s Dan Johnston. Morton’s team were on fire and outplayed Robins’ team to win 13-11.

Dave Carey and Mike Ross from the Temuka club played Kia Toa’s Lockie Barnes and Aaron Taylor but the Temuka men were too strong, running out with the game 16 to 9 to give Carey’s team four wins.

In the other game Alphy Trevathan and Kieran Aker had three wins and played Waimate’s Jason Rhodes and Nick Scriggins. Rhodes’ team came out strong in the first five ends and had a three-point lead, but then the wheels fell of and Trevathan ran away with a 21-12 victory to make them the inaugural winner of event.

Trevathan, in his ninth year, and Aker in his third year, played outstanding bowls all day and were worthy winners of the event.

Carey and Ross were the other team with four wins and with some amazing shots by Carey and great leading by Mick Ross, they deserved their second placing.

Results: 1st Alphy Trevathan, Kieran Aker (Geraldine) 4 wins 35 ends plus 40; 2nd Dave Carey, Mick Ross (Temuka) 4 wins 34 ends plus 26; 3rd Sam Morton (Temuka) Dan Johnston (Kia Toa) 3 wins 33 ends plus 18; 4th Dan Rooney, Roger Glendinning (Geraldine) 3 wins 32 ends plus 8; 5th Paul Brohan, Ian Holley (Kia Toa) 3 wins 30 ends plus 9; 6th Adrain Robins (West End), Trev Cloughley (Kia Toa) 3 wins 29 ends plus 14. — Richie Kerr
