The Aoraki Foundation is urging South Canterbury people to consider adding workplace giving to their New Year’s resolutions.

Workplace giving allows employees to donate directly from their pay, making charitable giving both tax-efficient and hassle-free. Even the smallest regular contributions accumulate over time, creating meaningful, long-term impact. These steady donations help build a stronger, more connected community — one where local needs are met by local people.

Gift & community adviser Kirsty Burnett said that for businesses, workplace giving was more than a charitable gesture.

"It helps cultivate a culture of generosity, strengthens team spirit, and deepens a company’s connection to the community it serves. When employees and employers work together to support local causes, the ripple effect is felt far beyond the office walls."

Mrs Burnett said one of the strengths of workplace giving was its accessibility — anyone can participate, regardless of donation size.

Jacob Gormack from ANZ Timaru had been searching for a way to give back to South Canterbury.

"I’ve been swotting up on the Aoraki Foundation for a while and thought it sounded like my cup of tea," Mr Gormack said.

"I see my regular donations as investing in our community. I might not see the returns in my bank account, but I will see them outside on the main street."

Mr Gormack said he believed the Aoraki Foundation’s General Impact Fund was an ideal option for younger generations who might not be in a position to make large contributions.

"This is a way to give back while still keeping within our means."

There was also a financial advantage — the employee receives a tax credit of 33.33% on their donation, reducing their PAYE amount. This happens at pay time instead of having to claim a refund at the end of the tax year, another reason workplace giving was a smart and accessible option.

Mrs Burnett said if people were looking to make a difference this year, consider joining community-minded locals like Mr Gormack. Get in touch with the Aoraki Foundation to learn how workplace giving can help you invest in South Canterbury’s future.
