A Timaru man’s three decades of involvement in croquet has been rewarded with a life membership.

Brian Maxwell began his croquet career in 1993 at the Timaru Croquet Club, and after that club closed, he joined the Aorangi Croquet Club in 2002 and has been an active member for 23 years, playing for 32 years in total.

Aorangi club president Gordon Hardacre said Mr Maxwell had always been very approachable and skilled at sorting out legal and complicated issues relating to the club and the South Canterbury Croquet Association, and was good at obtaining funding for different projects for the club.

He had served as a trustee on the Timaru Croquet Trust, and been treasurer and executive member of the South Canterbury Croquet Association.

During his time with the Aorangi club, he had served as treasurer, club captain and coach, and was a mentor to many players in the club. He also organised business house croquet.

Mr Hardacre said Mr Maxwell had a vast knowledge of the rules and regulations of the croquet games and had been a great asset to the club, sorting out the new constitution for Aorangi and the South Canterbury Association. — Allied Media
