World champion back for Waimate Shears

World shearing champion Cam Ferguson will be back to defend his open machines title at the Waimate Shears today.

Ferguson, who won the individual shearing title at the world championships in Wales in July, is one of the big names entered in the event, along with David Fagan.

It is hoped to have about 160 entries, Wool-handling heats will be held at Russell Hart's woolshed, and the finals and all blade and machine-shearing events at Waimate Stadium.

A speed-shearing event was held at the stadium last night.

Transport Waimate was carting the sheep for the Waimate Shears and about 1200 were required. The influx of dairy cows in the area had made it harder to source sheep, one of the organisers, Warren White, said.
