$2.2m sewage plant contract awarded

The Clutha District Council has awarded a $2.2 million contract which will see extra capacity and better treatment at its Milton sewage treatment plant.

The council confirmed this week it had awarded Delta Utility Services a $2.2 million deal to complete major upgrades of the plant after it had considered four tenders from contractors around the country.

Council district assets manager Jules Witt said the upgrade would provide extra capacity and better treatment to reduce the impact of the discharge into the Tokomairiro River.

The council is working in partnership with the Department of Corrections, which paid for more than half of the new plant's initial construction as it supplies services to the nearby Otago Corrections Facility.

The improvements will not only improve services to and from the prison but cater for future growth in and around the Milton community.

Mr Witt said the council had recently been given a new 35-year consent to continue discharging into the river.

"The upgrades are designed to meet the new consent conditions and include ultraviolet disinfection, improved nutrient removal and a new diffuser for discharge to the river," he said.

Construction will start soon and should be finished by January next year.
