Balclutha Bowlers decide to rebuild rooms

The Balclutha Bowling Club has unanimously agreed to rebuild its clubrooms which were destroyed by fire last month.

About 25 of its 34 playing members attended the annual meeting on Wednesday night to be briefed on the blaze and to formally accept a committee recommendation that the Charlotte St facilities be replaced.

Club secretary Roger Merrett said the turnout was one of the largest at an annual meeting for some years and members gave their full support to rebuilding the clubrooms.

The club's insurance claim has been accepted and moves are afoot for an architect to be hired so designs can be drawn up and tenders called. The next move was to have the site cleared.

It would be several months before the new facilities would be open but it was impossible to give an exact date, Mr Merrett said.

An electrical fault caused the April 19 fire.

While the building was fully insured, many irreplaceable photographs and much club memorabilia were lost.
