The Christmas season has arrived in Balclutha.

Last weekend the town's new Christmas tree was erected outside the Clutha Information Centre, last night the annual can cruise for foodbank donations was held, coloured street lights will soon start appearing and this Friday the town's annual community Christmas concert will be staged.

Balclutha community co-ordinator Irene Mosley, pictured with the town's Christmas tree, hopes the festive spirit will rub off on the community, especially for Friday's show at the Balclutha Showgrounds.

This year, it features the return of entertainer Ronald McDonald.

"Ronald was a real hit with both old and young at last year's show, which made us decide to invite him back this year. He is such a great entertainer."

The show is organised by the South Otago Festival Trust.

Gates open at 5.30pm and those attending are encouraged to bring some tea or buy food on site.

The show will start at 6pm, wet or fine.

Entrance is by gold coin donation and a non-perishable food item.
