Drivers continue to ignore speed limits coming into Lawrence, leaving members of the local community board frustrated.
Speed was once again at the forefront of the ''work in progress'' report at the Lawrence-Tuapeka Community Board meeting last week.
It has often been discussed by board members that vehicles regularly flout the 70kmh speed limit coming into Lawrence at Sowerby St and Harrington Pl by continuing to drive at 100kmh or above the 50kmh limit once they were in the main part of town.
Cr Geoff Blackmore said people driving into town were often unaware what the speed limit was, as the signs were difficult to see and no-one was there to enforce the limits on drivers.
''[The drivers] are doing it because they can get away with it.''
He said the board was unable to enforce the limit, but it would be worth asking the police to enforce it on a more regular basis.
''It's only in recent times it has got bad.''
Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan said he saw a heavy truck which he reckoned was doing at least 80kmh through Ross Pl in Lawrence.
The board wanted to make contact with the NZ Transport Agency to voice its concerns.
It wanted to shift the speed limit zone so it was more obvious to drivers.
In a statement provided to the Otago Daily Times, NZTA senior safety engineer Roy Johnston said the agency had previously had ''some informal communication'' regarding speed limits in Lawrence.
NZTA was happy to talk to the board about ways to slow drivers down and improve safety.
However, in general speeding was a police issue, so they should be alerted to concerns, Mr Johnston said.
