There was a different kind of big splash at Tuapeka Aquatic Centre recently as the Lawrence Community joined forces to travel the length of the South Island.

Led by Lawrence Lions Club, local groups and individuals teamed up to walk, bike, run, swim, and row a combined total of 1060km in just six and a-half hours.

There were many highlights throughout the day, starting with New Zealand First list MP Mark Patterson clocking up 10km on a rowing machine.

Haidee McRae showed determination as she closed in on 250 lengths of the swimming pool to add 6.24km, and Sarah Murray totalled 50.5km over all disciplines, shadowed very closely by Michelle Rochford.

Lucy Murray, 8, and her sisters Bella, 6, and Fern, 3, swam 2.6km collectively to show youth was no obstacle.

At the other end of the age scale, the Lawrence walking group tallied their total to add a healthy 180km.

Cheers erupted as kilometres were tracked against geographical locations and each corresponding port of call for the local Row for Life team was reached.

Fire brigade representatives from around the district contributed 46.4km, and putting in a solid performance to push the team over the line were members of the Lawrence Bike Club, who surpassed all expectations to total 135.77km in 3.5 hours.

The community cardio day set out to equal the distance Invercargill rowing great Ian Hamilton and his team will be covering on their epic Row for Life fundraising venture in February.

Funds were raised as well as awareness, as $886 in donations went to Starship Hospital, The Child Cancer Foundation, The Lions Cancer Trust, and NZ Surf Life Saving.

"They’re really important charities. Everyone’s lives will be touched by cancer in some way," Mr Patterson said.

"Hats off to Lawrence Lions for organising it. It was a fantastic community event and in true Lawrence fashion, everyone swung in behind it."
