Clutha's biennial celebration of sportspeople will host an Olympic gold medallist when the event is held later this year.

Olympic 2004 triathlon winner Hamish Carter has been confirmed as the guest speaker at the 2009 Clutha District Sports Awards in October.

The last awards, in 2007, featured Olympic cycling champion Sarah Ulmer.

Sport Clutha co-ordinator Tiny Carruthers said the organising committee was thrilled to have secured Carter for the event.

Former Sport Otago chief executive Paul Allison will again be master of ceremonies.

Mr Carruthers said two new awards had been created this year, recognising the efforts made by younger sportspeople in the district.

Junior sportsman and junior sportswoman titles will be awarded, alongside the usual awards for best coach, athlete with a disability, team and services to sport.

An overall winner will be decided from the individual winners.

The event will be held at the Rosebank Lodge in Balclutha on October 21.

Nomination forms and tickets for the event will be available in coming weeks.
