Centre briefing for Tokomairiro board

Tokomairiro High School's board of trustees and management will be briefed early next month on the findings of an investigation into serious allegations against a training scheme it administers.

The Tertiary Education Commission (Tec) launched an inquiry after the Otago Daily Times reported a raft of allegations made by former Tokomairiro Training Centre tutor Brian Crawford, who claimed the centre was rife with assaults, mismanagement and inappropriate behaviour by tutors and management.

The school, which receives Tec funding to run the centre and training scheme, has consistently denied the allegations.

In a statement, Tec's acting director of tertiary providers and service centre, Pauline Barnes, confirmed it had completed the four-month investigation and staff were now reviewing its findings.

"We are expecting to discuss the results with Tokomairiro High School in early December," she said.

Mrs Barnes declined to confirm if the results would eventually be made public.

When asked how much the investigation was likely to cost, she said Tec had staff whose job it was to manage relationships with providers and monitor their performance.

"There have not been any significant other costs," she said.
