A Milton vicar is pleading for the return of a cross and two candlesticks after her church was burgled this month.

Between Sunday, May 13, and Friday, May 18, someone broke into the St John's Anglican Church in Milton, smashing a leadlight window in the process, taking a brass cross and two brass candlesticks.

Reverend Vivienne Galletly, the vicar of St John's Anglican Church in Milton, said she and the congregation were "sad and disappointed" that someone would break into the church, causing damage and taking the cross and candlesticks.

Miss Galletly said the brass cross and the candlesticks were given to the church in memory of people who had died.

"This theft shows disrespect to those who gave the church these beautiful articles and to the memory of those they love. They have not stolen from us alone but from everyone who uses the church. We would like the cross and candlesticks back and hope that those who took them will leave them undamaged somewhere ... and return them to us."

Constable Robin Hutton, of Milton, said police were "appalled" offenders had targeted the church and stolen items which held a huge significance to the church and its congregation.

Const Hutton appealed to the community to help solve the crime and said police would like to hear from anyone who might have any information in relation to the burglary or know the whereabouts of the stolen property.
