Twelve years on, and an annual coal giveaway is steaming on, with 12 tonnes of coal distributed around Clutha on Saturday.

Each winter, the City Impact Church, based in Balclutha, gives away large bags of coal to Clutha residents.

Church outreach convener Neil Goodman said the church bought about nine tonnes of coal, with local business Kai Point Coal donating the remaining three tonnes.

Mr Goodman said church members and the youth group spent about an hour and a-half bagging 12 tonnes of coal and sewing up the bags on Friday night.

The coal was quickly snapped up in less than an hour on Saturday from two locations, one in Balclutha and the other in Milton.

Mr Goodman said the outreach project was well received each year.
