Innovative learning has always been an important factor at Waiwera South Primary School and now the school has shiny new couches for its classrooms.

The school received $2670 from the Otago Masonic Charitable Trust to go towards six new couches.

Principal Melissa Ward said the school needed new furniture for its innovative learning environments.

"We thought these couches would be really great additions to all our classes.''

The couches complement existing beanbags and other chairs.

The response from pupils has been positive.

"They're absolutely loving them.''

Funds were scarce in rural schools and were often allocated to areas such as teacher salaries.

"Sometimes having money to access or purchase resources like [the couches] is very hard,'' Miss Ward said.

She was grateful for the support from the charitable trust.

"It was fantastic because otherwise we would not have been able to [do this].''

The money was given to Miss Ward on Sunday by the Otago Masonic Charitable Trust.

Seven grants were given out totalling about $11,000.
