Clutha is a safe place with a strong sense of community but needs to increase the opportunities for tourism, according to a report which measures how well the Clutha District Council and the people it serves are performing.
This week the council adopted the District Directions Community Outcomes report, a document mayor Juno Hayes said shows the district is performing well on many fronts.
Community outcomes are goals that the community decides should be achieved over the next decade. The council used results from a recent residents' survey and its own research to come up with the findings.
The surveys and investigations looked into a cross-section of life in the district from the public's perception of community groups, sporting facilities and their sense of pride through to water quality, statistics and educational opportunities.
The report covered both the highs and lows, the good points and the issues that need improvement.
Overall, the district was progressing well in several areas.
The highlights:
• strong sense of community
• strong sense of pride in the way towns and areas are looking
• agreement Clutha is a great place to live
• falling crime rate
• increased number of employees and businesses
• low unemployment
• access to quality educational facilities
The challenges:
• increasing tourism opportunities
• reducing accidents and subsequent ACC claims
• increasing the usage of swimming pools
• improving water quality
• lowering the rate of school leavers with no qualifications
• reducing crash rates on local roads and state highway
