Council opening up land

The Clutha District Council expects to break even on its Rosebank housing subdivision in south Balclutha once the last section in the first stage sells.

Although the final costs are not yet in, chief executive Charles Hakkaart believes the project will end up costing the council very little, if anything.

Twelve of the first 13 sections have changed hands and Mr Hakkaart said the sale price of the last section should ensure the development had not dented its coffers.

"We won't have made any money on it but we should break even essentially, I would think,'' he said.

The council paid $250,000 for the 4.7ha block, which has had its first half developed, with roads and infrastructure adding to its costs.

There were also some planning and engineering costs to be factored into the final equation, he said.

"We [the council] never went into this to make money but to open up some land and offer sections for people wanting to build in Balclutha.''

Mr Hakkaart said the second part of the subdivision may yet be opened up but the council wanted feedback on tentative plans to open up land in north Balclutha.

"We don't want to flood the market.''

The council wanted community feedback on its plans to create small residential sections as well as lifestyle blocks mixed with walking and cycle tracks and green areas.
