Crayfish scattered in crash

Volunteer firefighters from Balclutha were greeted with hundreds of crayfish when they attended a crash on an icy State Highway 1 just north of Balclutha, on Tuesday night.

Clutha police sub-area controller Senior Sergeant Richard Whitmore said emergency services were called to a truck crash at Stony Creek, a notorious stretch of road, about 11pm.

When they arrived, they found a truck had rolled halfway down a hill and into a paddock.

Its load of a tonne and a-half of crayfish was scattered nearby.

The 70-year-old driver appeared to have lost control on a hill after the road froze over.

He was taken to Clutha Health First and treated for minor cuts and bruising.

The fate of the crayfish was unknown.

A 50-year-old Milton man was processed for drink-driving in the town on Tuesday.

He will appear in the Balclutha District Court on July 14.
