An independent commissioner's decision on the proposed $5 million Clutha Recreation Centre, in Balclutha, is expected next month.
A consent hearing was held on Tuesday, before David Pullar, of Gore.
Clutha District Council planning and environment manager Murray Brass said Mr Pullar was engaged because the council was involved with the process.
The council received 10 submissions in July, split evenly for and against the recreation centre being built on the Dreaver Courts, Glasgow St.
At the hearing, South Otago Netball, the Sport Clutha steering group, Sport Otago and Sport Clutha made submissions in favour of the project, while Stephanie and Ken Leith, Scott Ferguson and Mike Evans, who are all Glasgow St residents, made submissions against the centre going ahead.
The commissioner was required to make a decision within three weeks of the hearing, and the parties should hear back in the next couple of weeks, Mr Brass said.
