Drivers hurt in same-direction collision

Two drivers received moderate injuries after their cars collided in South Otago yesterday.

The incident occurred at 10.50am on Kaka Point Rd, near the intersection with Factory Rd, about 8km north of Kaka Point.

The drivers, described by an official at the scene as an elderly male and an adult female, were the sole occupants of the vehicles.

Balclutha police Acting Senior Sergeant Christopher Wakelin said the man had sustained a possible fracture to his leg, and the woman a suspected head injury.

Both drivers were conscious, and able to leave their vehicles with assistance.

Acting Snr Sgt Wakelin said it was too early to say what had caused the crash. He did not believe speed was a factor.

"Both vehicles were travelling north towards Balclutha when the incident occurred. It may have been driver error, but it’s a good reminder for all to drive to the conditions while there’s still ice on some roads, and sunstrike remains a possibility."

Diversions remained in place on the road until noon, when a tow-truck was able to retrieve one of the vehicles from a ditch.

Both drivers were taken to Balclutha Hospital for further assessment.
