Romahapa woman Beate Thomas, who runs an Owaka backpackers operation, has applied for resource consent to the Clutha District Council to operate a "coffee caravan" at the Roaring Bay car park, just below the main Nugget Point car park and walking track.
If granted, it would be the first food or beverage operation offered to tourists and visitors at the destination which has become one of the most popular visitor spots in the district.
In her application, Ms Thomas said her business would not attract any more visitors and it would not be advertised but "serve visitors that are coming to the area anyway".
The caravan-trailer operation would operate during daylight hours, in a 10am-4pm timeframe during summer months and less in winter, mainly dependent on the weather.
Ms Thomas would prevent any potential for littering by providing litter bins to be emptied regularly.
She would also advise every customer to keep the area litter-free and to dispose of their litter in the bins provided. Ms Thomas would also check and clean up any litter daily.
In an interview, she said a survey in March and April of traffic in the area revealed up to 50 people an hour visited the area and Nugget Point lighthouse which gave her confidence of a captive market.
Her coffee caravan would sell coffee, tea and packaged food and snacks.
The Department of Conservation and Clutha District Council, which owns the land in the area, have recently agreed to work together on improvements to visitor viewing platforms, parking and infrastructure.
The council is also poised to receive Land Transport New Zealand funding to investigate and conduct the sealing of the Nuggets Rd.
