Exiting co-ordinator hopes for replacement

The woman who has led many of Balclutha's revitalisation projects in the past five years is leaving the job with mixed feelings.

Community co-ordinator Irene Mosley closed the doors in her Development House office for the last time late last week.

She said her link with the Clutha District Council had enabled many projects to be achieved.

Howver, she was disappointed that, even though she had given six months' notice, the council had not yet appointed someone else to the role.

"After five years of various community development contracts with the council, I can look back and say we have achieved an awful lot.

"But there is still a lot more to be done," she said.

Highlights during her tenure had included helping co-ordinate the development of a new boat ramp and developing the adjacent Arthur Strang Reserve.

She had enjoyed organising the new Balclutha Christmas tree and the decorative lighting along the town's main street, she said.

The development of youth worker Daniel Maze and the achievements of Project Clutha were also standouts.

But a disappointment had been the time taken to get any progress on the planned new recreation centre for the district.

"After four years, it is so frustrating that this project has not been moved along quicker," she said.

She was concerned by the failure to have someone else take over from her immediately.

The lack of a replacement in the role could delay or possibly derail some projects, she said.

Mrs Mosley had been due to step down in June but she gave the council a six-month extension, to provide time for a smooth transition.

The council had decided to fill the vacancy on an interim basis early next year.

It would possibly expand the role after consulting the public during its long-term council community plan process.

"I have worked so hard in this role with so many wonderful people, that it is a real shame that everything will have to be just packed up and left, with the hope that someone else will eventually be appointed to the position in the future," Mrs Mosley said.
