Work to seal the public carpark at Te Pou Ō Mata-Au-Clutha District War Memorial & Community Centre (TPŌMA) began last week, with completion expected by November.

When sealed, the carpark will feature marked spaces for more than 70 vehicles, including four mobility parks and dedicated areas for buses and motorhomes.

A budget of $690,000 has been allocated for the project which includes resealing work in three years’ time.

Clutha District Council deputy chief executive Jules Witt said the paving project represented the final step in the development of the community facility, which officially opened in August 2023.

Clearwater Civil has been contracted to carry out the work and will complete the project in stages to ensure continued access and minimal disruption to users.

Early work involves installation of new lighting and pre-sealing activity including raising and levelling sections of the carpark before applying chip seal to the entire surface.

Planners aim to keep the carpark open to the public throughout the project, excluding heavy vehicles, but areas may be temporarily unavailable while work is under way.

The council will provide advance notice of temporary closures of the adjacent Charles St footpath when required for safety.

The council and Clearwater Civil will be working closely with TPŌMA throughout the project to ensure minimal disruptions during events with high foot traffic.

"[We] encourage all visitors to TPŌMA to take extra care when accessing the carpark while work is under way. Please get in touch with council by phoning 0800 801 350 if you have any questions or concerns," Mr Witt said.
