One man hopes to reignite a spark missing from Balclutha for 10 years, as he seeks to form a new premier cricket team for the town.

Richard Ray said he loves cricket and plays for Clutha Valley in the South Otago premier competition.

However, he wants to improve the regional competition for everyone by helping ''re-form'' the Balclutha cricket team, which he said has not played a season in 10 years.

He said more teams were needed to keep the competition alive.

Last season, there were four teams in the competition: Clutha Valley, Owaka, Milton and Kaitangata.

It was the first year Clutha Valley had fielded a team in about 20 years, Mr Ray said.

He did not know why interest in the sport had dwindled in Balclutha.

If other areas, mostly with populations of fewer than 1000, were able to produce a team, then a town like Balclutha, with a population of about 4500, should be able to find enough players, he said.

''I'm hoping they just need someone to set a bit of a spark, which is what I'm trying to do.''

Even though he will be playing for Clutha Valley, he hoped to get a decent number playing for Balclutha.

''You want a bit of cover, so you want about 15 players.''

It was a chance to have a bit of fun and meet new people.

''Skill level is not a factor; it's just about getting participation.''
