Hopes the bowling club can be rebuilt

Balclutha Bowling Club committee members, still coming to terms with the loss of their clubrooms in a fire, will make a strong recommendation to rebuild when the issue is debated at the annual meeting this month.

Fire service investigators believe an electrical fault caused the April 19 blaze.

Club secretary Roger Merrett said members were given details of the loss recently and the executive agreed to strongly recommend that the Charlotte St clubrooms be rebuilt as soon as possible.

The building was fully insured but the fire destroyed many irreplaceable photogaphs and other club memorabilia.

The club's annual meeting on May 21 is expected to approve the rebuild but the club still faces the prospect of having no clubrooms for the start of the outdoor bowls season in September.

Mr Merrett said the club would need to hire an architect to prepare drawings for a new clubrooms before it called for tenders.

Finding a builder to do the work could also take some time, he said.

"I can't see it being ready for the start of the season."

The club had yet to make any arrangements for a temporary base until new clubrooms were ready.

Mr Merrett said the club had been overwhelmed with calls of support and sympathy from throughout the country.

"We would like to express our appreciation for everyone who has been in touch.

"All the businesses, the organisations, Bowls New Zealand and everyone else who made an effort and offered their help. We cannot thank people enough."

Club president John de Malmanche said the fire left the club with a heavy burden.

But he believed its close-knit membership would surmount the disaster and be determined not to let it ruin the club. After the April 19 fire broke out, the alarm was raised at 1.20am.

However, a team of about 25 firefighters from Balclutha, Milton and Kaitangata could do little but try to contain the blaze.
