Details of what a new Tapanui Hospital would look like and how much it would cost will be unveiled at a public meeting later this month.

West Otago Health Ltd will hold its annual meeting at the West Otago Community Centre on August 17, where it will release information about the proposed new health and aged-care centre.

The centre is expected to include a rest-home, residential care and general practice services on the grounds of the former Tapanui hospital.

The trust has been working on the project for several years, and chairman Brian Brenssell says trustees are looking forward to showing the community what it has been working on.

The new hospital would provide health care for the wider West Otago catchment of more than 2500 people, and effectively mean a return to a full primary health-care model for Tapanui for the first time in more than 15 years.

Mr Brenssell said the presentation would reveal concept plans, the range of possible health services to be offered and an indication of how much ratepayers and residents could be expected to contribute.

A feasibility study, commissioned by the trust late last year, revealed the project was a viable one for the community.

The West Otago public and Clutha ratepayers will be expected to contribute, but those and other details will be worked through over the coming months.

The full cost of the new facility, the number of staff it will employ, who will pay for it and its ongoing structure have yet to be confirmed, but the Otago Daily Times understands it will cost about $6 million.
