The Balclutha Golf Club's new irrigation system is worth its weight in gold, club officials say.
For years, the club had an irrigation set-up that failed to adequately water greens, but the new $112,000 arrangement not only did its job on the greens but the tee areas too, club president Ray Applegarth said.
The Community Trust of Otago granted $25,000 for the project.
Mr Applegarth said the old sprinkler heads on the 18 greens would not adequately soak the entire green, and during the last dry summer and the ensuing water restrictions, he and others had to wait until after 8pm to manually turn on sprinklers around the course, a job that took several hours to complete.
Now, the sprinkler heads circle the green and push the water inwards, putting more water on the green. There was the automatic timing system which allows the greenkeeper to programme irrigation on individual greens.
