Mayor backs St John

The Clutha branch of St John has a powerful patron to help in its campaign to recruit more volunteer ambulance officers.

District Mayor Juno Hayes, himself an ambulance volunteer for more than 20 years, has joined the local campaign to find more staff for the organisation.

In a joint statement with the group, Mr Hayes said he believed the campaign deserved as much community support as possible.

The campaign, which began last week, aims to address the dwindling number of volunteers.

Talking about his own experience within the organisation, Mr Hayes said there was a lot of satisfaction to be gained from helping others.

"St John ambulance volunteers are an integral part of our community and I'm sure there are people out there who can help them."

St John area committee chairman Colin Ward welcomed the mayor's support.
