Clutha Licensing Trust is looking forward to opening its newest facility very soon.

General manager Ross Balloch said staff were busy putting the finishing touches to the new facility, a gastro-pub called Arches.

"It’s been a long journey, but we are excited to be nearing completion of the project," he said.

"Like any project, there have been a few challenges along the way from rising costs to staff changes which delayed the project.

‘‘The trust has been committed to ensuring all the boxes are ticked off within our means; that were building the correct facility for the community within the budget. We are very proud of the outcome."

Located at the intersection of Clyde and Renfrew Sts, Arches replaces the long-standing Hotel South Otago, known locally as The Southy.

The old building was a popular destination for locals but was demolished in October 2022 due to the cost of the earthquake strengthening.

Arches will follow the hospitality "all-day trader" model making a destination offering something for everyone.

Mr Balloch said work begun on Arches in October last year when the floor was poured.

"The work has been carried out by Calder Group from Wanaka, who have done an excellent job making the vision a reality.

‘‘The new venue is a single storey 260sqm facility and will cater for about 120 inside and 60-80 customers in the outside areas."

Mr Balloch said people have definitely been talking about a lot about the venue.

"We really hope the community will see Arches as their pub — a great place with something for everybody.

‘‘Our goal was to create a family atmosphere both inside and outside, and were confident we’ve achieved that.

‘‘It’s a beautiful place to sit on a sunny day and enjoy a meal with friends and family."
