Nugget Point upgrade almost completed

Work on a major upgrade of one of Clutha's top tourist destinations is nearing an end and visitors should soon be enjoying the improvements.

The Department of Conservation says it will only be a few weeks until the $600,000 project at Nugget Point is finished.

An official opening is expected to be held about November, towards the start of the busy summer season.

A new car park, viewing platforms, walking tracks and other enhancements have been a feature of the upgrade.

Doc's visitor and historic assets programme manager, Bill Wheeler, said this week the structural phase of the project was entering its final stages.

The new main car park was finished and just needed road-marking staff to lay out the parking bays.

The new toilet block was almost finished but remained shut until work was completed.

The Roaring Bay hide area was complete with just some cladding work needed, while the track leading down to it had been upgraded, he said.

The only significant area off-limits to visitors was the viewing platform by the lighthouse.
