Highway reopens after fatal crash

State Highway 1 has reopened south of Milton after a fatal crash this afternoon.

One person died and three were injured in the accident, which occurred on SH1 just south of the intersection with SH8, near Moneymore Rd, about 12.30pm.

A vehicle travelling north collided with a truck travelling south, and a van that was following the northbound vehicle went into a ditch.

Police confirmed one person died in the crash.

The highway was closed for most of the afternoon, but the NZTransport Agency has advised it is now open again.

A St John spokesman said two ambulances and a helicopter were sent to the scene.

Ambulance officers treated one person with moderate injuries at the scene and two with minor injuries.

The patient with moderate injuries was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
