Parking approved for council units

Tenants living in a group of council-owned housing units in Balclutha will soon be able to park their cars off the street  for the first time.

A decision to approve pavement for an off-street car park at the council-owned units in Argyle St went through two amendments before it was agreed upon by the Clutha District service delivery committee last week.

A family member of a tenant living in one of the units requested off-street parking because they wanted more security and to be able to park closer to their home.

The original recommendation was to decline the request for off-street parking. After discussion by committee board members and Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan, an amendment was made to approve the request for off-street parking in front of the units.

This initial amendment was declined by the committee. The standing committee agreed to a second amendment by Cr Hilary McNab to approve the off-street parking behind the units. The land where the car parks will go was identified as an area for potential future community housing units but was noted in the meeting agenda it was unlikely to happen any time soon.

Mr Cadogan sympathised with the family who requested the parking and believed there should be parking for tenants.

"We’re a bit better than that as a council."

He said the council had a responsibility to offer due care for those living there.

All four units are occupied and two of the tenants have vehicles. There is no off-street parking for the units at present.

The agenda said parking in Argyle St was "not always ideal" as it was identified as narrow. When the units were originally designed, it was not intended the tenants would have cars.

Mr Cadogan said the units were not made fit for purpose when they were first built.

The service delivery committee approved the request for off-street parking on the area identified behind the units.
