Record response to plan

The Clutha District Council faces a heavy workload from tomorrow as it prepares to wade through about 180 submissions on its draft long-term council community plan.

That number is thought to be the highest received for any council annual or long-term plan.

Of the 180 submissions received, Mr Shaw said many deal with controversial items including plans to demolish the Naish Park bird aviary in Balclutha and remove funding for the South Otago Museum curator.

Councillors will also study more than 500 responses to a questionnaire it sent out to gauge the public's view on key issues of the document.

These include proposals to contribute towards the proposed Clutha Recreation Centre, the introduction of recycling, a $2 million upgrade of Balclutha's main street and infrastructure improvements throughout the district.

Council communications co-ordinator Jamie Shaw said the response showed there was plenty of interest in what the council hoped to achieve during the next decade.

Details of the submissions will be released tomorrow, when the council hears from about 35 submitters who want to speak to their submission.

The questionnaire responses will be collated and data from these will be tabled at a special council meeting on June 4 and 5.

Council staff will then prepare reports and recommendations on each submission which will be presented for a final debate at the council meeting on June 25.

The long-term plan will be adopted and rates struck for the 2009-10 year at the same meeting.
