Dust from the Tuapeka Transport depot  in Irvine St  is angering some  Lawrence residents.

The Lawrence-Tuapeka Community Board acknowledged concerns from a resident at  its meeting last week.

The resident, who spoke at the meeting and did not wish to be named, said she lived near the transport depot and was "frustrated" by the yard conditions.

"Since moving here a couple of years ago, it’s got worse. It’s definitely impacted my health. We’re pretty much ready to leave.

"We have silt on our porch. It fills our drains. We have to clean our drains ourselves.

"We’re surprised about the apathy on the issue."

She said it became worse after the floods in July last year.

"The stones rolled away and all you got was dust."

The Tuapeka Transport yard is in Irvine St, close to the corner between the street and State Highway 8.

Board chairman Garry McCorkindale  said the weather could be part of the cause.

"This is one of the driest summers we’ve had . . . to my knowledge it’s never been an issue which has caused complaint."

Board member Elizabeth Ritchie said the Clutha District Council should look into the issue.

"This lady is standing here with health issues. I can’t ignore it."

The board said  it would pass the matter on to the  council and discuss the issue with Tuapeka Transport.

Tuapeka Transport Ltd is  part of  Road Transport Logistics Ltd, a company based in Tapanui.

Road Transport Logistics Ltd managing director Shona Robertson said yesterday  the company was aware  residents had complained about the dust.

She said there was a 20km speed limit in the yard and a dust suppressant was regularly applied to combat the problem.

But she said the yard may not have been the only source of dust.

"Mother Nature is a powerful lady. The current drought conditions and factors as simple as the wind direction have a large part to play in terms of the source of the dust and where it lands."
