Clinton's future as a service town to the rural community was strengthened yesterday, when its 24-hour automated fuel stop was officially opened.

Clinton Community Company managing director John Cochrane said the opening was delayed by a couple of days because of the power outage on Saturday night and someone pushing the emergency fuel stop button.

A Maori blessing was performed at the site yesterday morning, before Mr Cochrane pumped the first delivery of diesel into his ute, to the delight of about 15 residents who came to watch.

RD Petroleum managing director Don Harvey said the Clinton fuel stop was the first time his company had installed "leading edge technology" at a rural station, and while he was confident its "significant investment" would be well supported, generating a profit from the site was a long-term goal.

There were also plans for a similar station in Ranfurly, he said.
