Sealing project to begin

A long-awaited road sealing project on a key Clutha tourist route is about to start.

The Karoro Creek Rd and Ahuriri Flat Rd project involves a combined stretch of about 6km of gravel road which links Owaka with Kaka Point - two key destinations in the Catlins.

Clutha District Council chief executive Charles Hakkaart told the council recently the engineers' estimate was $1.69 million, and the contract was awarded to Southroads for $1.58 million. Three tenders, ranging from that sum up to $1.79 million, were received.

A contract has also been let to start investigations into another significant sealing project nearby - the Nuggets Rd. MWH NZ has been awarded that contract for $84,556 for designing the seal extension and developing the job so contractors have all the information they need to tender for the sealing.

The road leads from Willsher Bay towards the Nugget Point lighthouse.
