Second suspicious fire worries police

Police are still appealing for information after a Kaitangata house was destroyed by a suspicious fire on Monday.

Detective Constable Robin Hutton, of Balclutha, said it was the second suspicious fire on the Start St property.

Firefighters were called there on June 13 after a shed behind the house was also gutted, and police believed the two fires were linked, he said.

Police were not ruling out that the property's occupants were being targeted by the same people.

Det Const Hutton confirmed the fire was deliberately lit, but the cause would not be known until Southern Region fire safety officer Stuart Ide had completed his report.

Police were also waiting for the report on the shed fire, he said.

Police are seeking sightings of vehicles or people acting suspiciously between 8am and 10am in the Start St, Salcombe St, and Eddystone St areas.

Those with information should call Balclutha police on (03) 418-0203 or anonymously through Crimestoppers 0800-555-111.
