Ireland Jacobs was crowned Queen of all Clutha at the 150th South Otago A&P Show on Saturday.

Ms Jacobs (20), originally of Balclutha, said the competition was a unique experience.

The Show Queen competition is open to any young woman from South Otago.

Ms Jacobs lives in Dunedin at present, where she is studying towards a bachelor of science degree and works part time.

She planned to graduate next year and eventually get involved in research on Parkinson's disease, she said.

''That's not going to be an immediate postgraduate job, but it is my future goal.''

Winning the crown was just the ''cherry on top'' for an enjoyable overall experience.

''I didn't go out expecting to win; I went in and I had a good time and I made so many friends.''

She encouraged anyone who entered it in the future to make the most of the experience.

''At the end of the day, it's not about who wins or who gets the different awards.''

''It's just something really special to be a part of and it would be a missed opportunity if I didn't just go for it.''

Much more went into the build-up to show day than she had realised, Ms Jacobs said.

The 10 contestants raised money for Land Search and Rescue and attended meet-and-greet events.

She will be honoured at the upcoming Santa Parade in Balclutha on Saturday.

She cannot keep the Show Queen crown but was given ribbons as mementoes.

She will crown her successor at next year's show.
