Sunday markets are returning to Balclutha this weekend under the banner of the district's popular catchphrase.

The first of the new Clutha Country Sunday Markets will start tomorrow, with about seven food stalls confirmed.

Big River Promotions, an organisation of Balclutha retailers, is running the markets, which were privately managed last year.

Big River Promotions spokeswoman Irene Mosley said the first stalls would feature a variety of home baking, cheeses, fresh vegetables and flowers as well as ready-to-eat items.

"More stalls are planned for the future, subject to food-handling approval and availability of product," she said.

The business organisation was happy to support the concept of a community-run market in the town.

Mrs Mosley hopes the concept will give the town a destination for Sunday mornings with a timeframe that fits in with people's commitments and lifestyles.

The markets will be held at the Ryder's Paper Plus car park in John St from 9am until 12.30pm every Sunday.

The market was also keeping a space each week for community groups and organisations to sell fundraising items, Mrs Mosley said.

Anyone wanting to take advantage of this or keen to have a stall at the market should call (03) 418 4048 for more details.
